GAE 6-10

For my Graduate Assistantship Explortaion 6-10, I chose the following five schools that interested me: University of Tennessee, University of South Caroline, Indiana University of Pennslyvania, Seattle University, and Armstrong Atlantic State University. All of the schools that I chose have great graduate program for sports studies. The program that interested me the most is The University of Tennessee. The gpa requirements for most of the schools that i chose is a 2.7 out of a possible 4.0. Some schools like Tennessee require at least a 3.0 following the senior year of undergraduate studies. For some of the schools I've chosen I wasn't able to get much information for graduate assistantships. Tennessee had some graduate assistantships for working with recreational sports or being an IT assistant, but some were not currently posted at the time. Overall, the graduate programs provided alot information on the different sport studies programs each had and and i was interested what each had to offer to graduate students.

Event Managment

On Tuesday, November 23, I did my Event Management for my Sports Administration class. Steve Ruthsatz who is the Assistant Atheletic Director. Steve gave me a job to help out with men's and womens's basketball double header tuesday evening. I was in charge of  the gate and concession stand. It was really interesting to see how many people showed up for each school. I was also in control of the eagle pass which is a guest pass for the players parents; if they were not on the list they could not get in without paying. I had a fun time working and quite possible I would want to help out with future Reinhardt sporting events as well.

Turner Feild Site Visit

Our Sports Administration class took a trip to Turner Feild for one of our site visits. It was very interesting and we were able to see many parts of the stadium. We toured the Braves Hall of Fame Museum, their locker rooms, and even the Braves dugout. I was really interested when our tour guide showed our class the media rooms and the suites. They have alot of stuff going in the background when we are watching the game on television. I think it would be an awesome experience to intern either doing ticket sales or grounds crew. It would be a fun environment and I would be able to meet new potential contacts. After the tour, we got in a group picture and said our goodbyes and thank yous. I was really pleased with this site visit and I hope future Sport Administration students enjoy it as well.

human resource

Andrea and I were looking for a play- by- play announcer for the Rome Braves Minor League Profession Baseball Club.   The job is to provide commentary and detailed overview of the games and to document statistics for records. Andrea and I listed the criteria that the applicant had to meet.  He or she has to have at least a Bachelors degree in communicator and defiantly knowledge of the game. Playing experience is a plus and commentary/announcing experience is also very important.  The applicant must have great computer and social skills and have some knowledge of the Rome braves.

GA Tech/ GA Dome visit

Today, our sport administration class went to the Georgia Tech recreational facility and to the Georgia Dome.  First we went to Georgia Tech where we got to see many of the neat things that their recreation facility has to offer.  Jonathan Hart gave us a tour around the building and told us some really interesting facts about the facility, such as how they averaged 600,000 visitors in their first year. They have a 35 foot rock climbing wall, 15,000 sq. ft. fitness center and 50 Meter competition pool with a high dive.  We then went up stairs to look at the auxiliary gyms. One of the gyms is a multipurpose gymnasium that allows students to play basketball, volleyball, or badminton. The other gym is an indoor inline soccer and roller hockey court. After I got done taking some pictures we all went down stairs to take one last picture with Jonathan before we headed to the CNN center to eat some lunch and made our way to Georgia Dome. We got to the Georgia Dome we were greeted by the tour guide. He gave us a tour through the whole Georgia Dome. We started the tour at the very top of the stadium where the Coordinators sit, it was quite a view. We then went to the Media lounge were all the big sports writers write their stories about the game.  I thought it was really cool when we got to see the suite and the super suites.  I was able to get some really good pictures since I probably won’t be to get in a suite any time soon. Afterward we went to the Atlanta Falcons locker room where we got to see the layout of where everyone sits and changes to get ready for the game.  I found out the color of the visitors team locker room is pink and periwinkle to throw the visiting team off balance while they are getting ready for the game. We finally were able to go out onto the field and walk around. It was one of the greatest experiences I have had. I could just imagine having 70,000 fans screaming at you or cheering you on. It was an amazing site.  We conclude the visit with some more pictures then said our thank you and headed back to Reinhardt. It was a pretty fun day.

Bob Pearson visit

Athletic director Bob Pearson from Berry College came to talk to us today in our sports administration class. He gave each of us a hand out that had a list of quotes and asked us individually to comment on any one quote. I really thought that it was an interesting approach to get us thinking about what the quotes really meant to us and how they apply to the sports world, he also talked about what each quote meant to him as well.  At the beginning of the speech he also so gave us a whistle, a clip, and a bright yellow note card which represented how each one is valuable in a different way. The quote that was asked to me was “Enjoyment, pure and simple, should be experienced in sport, on the job and in your everyday life”. My response was that what you put into life you should enjoy it and feel proud about it. I enjoyed his visit and speech and afterwards we all took a group picture.

ice 11 - 15

I was able to find most of the internships on jobsinsports.com. My internships included:  Turner broadcasting, working stadium operations with the Daytona Cubs, doing athlete and property marketing, and doing a marketing internship with Comcast. I felt comfortable with all these internships and I believe I would enjoy the work experience that is offered in these internships. One of the internships that really caught my eye is the athlete and property marketing; essentially I would help market research and be an assistant to a sports marketing team that concentrates on different sports divisions. It would be a great networking opportunity for me to get out in the sport world. I also think working with the Daytona cubs would be an interesting internship to have; I would be managing ticket sales, doing media relations, and help with marketing /group sales. I would be able meet new people gain new skills that could potentially lead me to a job in the near future.

Internship - career explorations 6 -10

As I did My Internship- Career Exploration 6-10 I found some really good jobs that I would enjoy a lot that were in my area of interest.  I found my Internships through the jobsinsports.com web site. The First Internship that really stood out to me was The Detroit Tigers- Amateur Scouting Internship. This internship includes tasks such as watching and analyzing highlight videos and assisting Scout directors and making notes on the outstanding players. This sounds like a big job but I think it would be an excellent networking tool for me, for challenging and an invaluable experience. Another Internship that I found was working the scoreboard for the Detroit Tigers and managing the operation of a game.  I would meet new people and learn different skills than I have ever had the opportunity to be exposed to before.

Graduate assistantship 1 - 5

I had a great time exploring the different Institutions for my graduate Assistantship. My First choice included institutions like University of Miami, Canisius College, and Kent State. All of the institutions and programs that I read over and looked through all seem appealing to my areas of interest. Some of the programs offered Masters in Sports Administration whereas others offered masters in Kinesiology and Sports Management. Most of the institutions that I found are very small but their sports study programs seem to be very popular.  I think this is because this area of the sports industry is growing very rapidly.  I have a lot more research to do but it could be that one if these programs is where I go for my next steps after graduating from Reinhardt University.

YMCA visit

On Tuesday, our sports administration class went to visit Nicole Lawson who runs part of the YMCA in Canton. Nicole told us about all of the neat activities and work out facilities at the YMCA.  She talked to us about how she had fellow Reinhardt student who used to intern there and how it is an amazing networking experience for college students. After her speech she gave us a tour of the amazing facility. The thing that stuck out to most to me at the recreational facility was the system that helps athletic trainers train their clients even when they are not there, the system allows the client to put in a pass code that then tells them an already set up list of reps and guidelines to follow. I had a great time on this visit.

First five internships

The first five internships that I chose I got from jobsinsports.com. Most of the internships were not really coaching related but more about ticket sales and marketing. One of the internships was working at the Orange Bowl down in Miami Florida where I could work ticket sales and learn how to work and excel in some marketing skills. Another really cool fact is that most of the internships that I chose offer college credit. The different locations of the internships would allow me to branch out and network with different people from different areas. I can’t wait to find an internship and get started.

Becoming invaluable

The article, “Becoming Invaluable” was really created to help Sports Study majors to understand what would be important in their college career. Strong academics, personal development, networking, and specific goal realizations are all key things to gain during a college career. The slideshow is very specific to show someone step by step what they must achieve and work for during and even after college. In the freshmen and sophomore years a strong GPA and sports involvement are important. During the junior and senior years one must maintain a strong GPA and begin searching for internships along with networking. After graduation considering graduate school is wise for a leg up on the competition because having an MBA is favorable for cutting the competition. This article also tells you what potential employers are looking for, experience, good grades, hobbies, and philanthropy.

This article also showed that all while working hard to build your credibility for the professional world it is important to realize what exactly you want out of your sports career, where do you want to live? How much time are you willing to spend working? How much are you willing to relocate? These questions are important to what exact career you want. Being aware of what you want, working hard, and becoming a well rounded person are keys to becoming invaluable sports studies major.

guest speaker : Vic Mitchell

Today, Vic Mitchell from Shorter University came to our class and spoke to us about coaching and the administrative world that he lives in. Coach Mitchell is the women’s basketball coach at Shorter where he has coached for twenty years. During his years at the University of Georgia, Mitchell was a manager during school and an assistant coach when he graduated for the men's basketball team, which in 1983 advanced to the Final Four. Vic was also a part of the 1981-1982 squad that reached the Final Four as well. Before he  accepted the job he saw daily practices at Georgia and soon got used running a basketball program. I think it’s really interesting how after he finished UGA his first job was at Reinhardt where he coached for six years before leaving. Coach Mitchell told us that it is very important for whatever field we decide to work in that we stay connected with people and  work with them. Coach Mitchell aslo told us how we should research the job surroundings and see what your role is in with the school or facility. I really enjoyed this guest speaker because I love to hear about the journeys they endured and to see what they have been through in the past.

guest speaker : Peggy Collins Feerehy

Today, Peggy Collins Feerehy, from career services came to talk to our sports administration class about networking, establishing a professional ground, and getting your toes wet in the business world. Mrs. Collins mentioned how it is important to sell yourself in the same way you would sell a product; this lesson would be best carried out during the career fair taking place on November 10, it is a great way to meet people and network. For example the baseball team attended last year and Mrs. Collins had said that they had a great impact on business leaders at the fair, which may greatly help them in the future when they set out for their careers.

Mrs. Collins also demonstrated to the class how to type up an appropriate resume. The most popular resume is the chronological resume. 80% of resumes are in the chronological format, she explained the importance of the stating summary in the beginning of the resume and how it catches the reader’s eye. Mrs. Collins also gave us a handout on Focus 2, Focus 2 is an online career and education planning website. On focus 2 you can search for jobs in your preferred area of study; along with the job results it gives you contact information for those employers. Focus 2 also allows you to create a portfolio for prospecting employers to see. Mrs. Collins gave us some great information today and it will surely help me in the future when I am searching for a job myself!
