The Stars Magic Johnson and Lary Bird
The Video about Larry Bird and Magic Johnson is one of the best videos i have seen all year. These two unique basketball players both played around the same time and both changed the game of basketball forever. Earvin Magic johnson went to michigan state where he played ball. He was a smart kid grew up in the city with his family with his brothers and sisters. He was hard nosed kid who practiced alot and already knew what he wanted to do in his life: Play Basketball. At the same time Larry bird was almost quite the same. Bird grew up with his family in a very small town and were very poor at the time. Things even got worse, his dad commited suicide when bird was at young age. The only thing Larry Bird knew what to do was to play basketball. He went to Indiana but soon found out that he didn't have the money to attend so he went Indiana State instead. Michigan state and Indiana State are two different places to play basketball. You have a power house team and then you have team that most likey wouldnt get in the NCAA tournemnt unless that had someone like Larry bird to change the course of the game. They were the top athletes in countryt and soon played on the USA dream team, and when they saw each other play they were shocked. Magic didn't know a white kid could play so well. They both made it to the NCAA championship against eachother. Michigan State won but it wouldnt be the last time they would see eachother. Bird went to the Celtics and Magic went to the Lakers. Two teams that were destined to play against each other in the finals. I really liked the video and i wish we could of watched the whole thing because I was drilled in and lost track of time.
Straight Outta LA
The Straight Outta LA Film was about the Oakland Raiders and how they impacted the city of Los Angeles. In The 80's you had gangs, Hip hop and then of course the The LA Raiders. The Oakland Raiders soon transfered to La to play in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. It had Such a huge impact on the City that it created a new enviorment for the Team and the Raider's Fans. Ice Cub and Snoop dog were the narrators of the story and both described what it was like growing up in LA duiring this time. They both had a passion for their team. It was like if you wore Black and Silver you were representing for that city and for your self. Also the music senstation " rap " was growing and ice was Part of that growth in LA. He was soon in group Called NWA and feautured a hit song " straight outta Compton", describing how rough it really is in LA. The Black and Silver was the color of the 80's. It meant that you were nasty, tough and really just all a round hard nosed team. Every body wanted to be black and silver, some teams even tried it out. I really didn't know that all this happend and it was influential to the city of LA. I really liked the video and I hope in the future there are more like it.

Alive and Kicking Article Response
Alive and Kicking was one of the best articles I have read so far in my sport studies classes. This article was about young refugees from all over the world that moved from hard living conditions and violent societies to Clarkston, Georgia. This remarkable story would not have been possible without a young woman who guided the refugees to greatness. Luna, a Muslim from Jordan was a soccer coach who one day saw the refugees playing soccer in an apartment complex parking lot. Since then she went to that parking lot every day, at the same time to play soccer with them and learn about their devastating past. Luna Then decided that coaching them as a full soccer team would be a great thing for them. It was a rough road at the beginning and the other teams that they played were very discouraging and mean. It was also hard for the refugees because there were a lot of gangs around Clarkston; it wasn’t the nicest area in Atlanta. Yet, within two years her remarkable story went public and many organizations donated money and support to the team and things skyrocketed from there. The pinnacle of success and joy for Luna was when one of her players got accepted into a four year university to play soccer. She felt that she had succeeded and had a great impact these kids’ lives. In my own thoughts, I was very much moved and I wish that every coach were this committed to their players, families, and community.

Dare to Compete
As a class, we watched a short video about women in sport and about how women got into sports and started competing. In the beginning of the video, it explained that many men looked down upon women comepeting in an atheltic event because they thought that running and anything to do with athletics that it was to strenuous for women. It was suzanna Lenglen who was first womens athlete to be recognized. she was a French tennis player who drank from her flask and one time someone spiked her flask with water and she ended up losing that match. In then 1928 olympics there was anouther issue that was being played out. The women who ran the 800 meter race could barely do anyhthing afterwards so they thought it was to hard for women so they banned the 800 meter race for like another 30 years. Another big accomplishment in the history of womens sports is young lady name Gertrude Ederle who swam the english channel and also broke records. There were some sports though that where acceptable in the sporting world like golf, tennis, badminton and any less strenuating activities.
Suzanna Lenglen was the first women's sports star. She was a French tennis player that drank during her games and jumped around like she was in ballet. Gertrude Ederle was the first woman to swim the English Channel. She beat all other records of the swim by using a "very" hard and tiring stroke that even a man couldn't pull off. She beat all the other records by 2 hours. The 1928 Olympics also slowed women's participation in sports. The runners after the 800 meter race were to exhausted and could not even stand anymore
This video was about women in sport and how and when they began to compete like the men. Back then exercise was considered too strenuous for women and was said that they could not compete in anything that the men do. In 1919 women earned the right to vote, but still couldn’t participate in athletics. Eventually women’s track and field olympics was created. In the 1928 Olympics 800 meter race women were allowed to compete, but all of the competitors became exhausted and laid out on the grass like dominos. Anyone would get tired after competing in an 800 meter race but because they were women it was a huge controversy. All nine of the women finished the race, three of the women medaled and they also set records. After this women could only run 100 meters at a time, and it was 32 years before they could run another 800 meter race. Women in sport was so looked down upon that the bicycle was said to even be too hard on a woman, worse than riding a horse. Some of the only socially acceptable ports were, tennis, golf, archery, and yachting. Women were only allowed to participate in sports where they could wear skirts and look lady like. Many things were interesting to me about this video. There were a lot of women that stood out back then. One being, Gertrude Ederle, she was the first woman to swim the English channel, and also the first person ever to swim it freestyle. She swam it in 14 hrs and 31 min, which broke the men’s record. Suzanne Lenglen was also a superstar. She would perform dance while playing tennis. She was very charismatic and set trends for many women. Suzanne had a very dramatic life and died at age 39. I thoroughly enjoyed this video and I am very thankful for what has come about for women and sport today.

Deviance in Sport
In my Sport in Society class, we watched a video about deviance in sports. The video was a 30 for 30 espn video about O.J. Simpson and the issues that surrounded him off in life. In 1994 O.J. was accused of murder against his wife and waiter that his wife was having an affair with. The video describes all the the things that were going on that day. Arnold Palmers last game of golf in competition. The New Your Rangers won the Stanley cup and had a parade in New York City. The Nba Finals were going on while the chase for O.J. Simpson was hot on almost every news channel. I dont really remember that day very well, but i do know it was a very distracting day in the world sports. O.J. Simpson may have been deviant off the feild but while on the feild he was a famous icon to many people. In situation like steriods or gambling, deviance in sports has been a big issue in sports society. Mark Mcguire, Sammy Sosa, Bary Bonds were all big names in the late 90's and were all deviant bevause of the use of steriods.
We hear it on the news alot on ESPN with the Ohio State Players or players who are geeting them selves into trouble. It is a big issue in our society

In the Sports Illustrated article “Pure Heart”, a writer relives his past which describes the Triple Crown winner secretariat and the stories of the races he has been to. The article starts off at the Claiborne barn where Secretariat is about to pass on. The writer is so enthused by this compelling horse and describes him as a Greek mythological creature. During the autopsy, they recognize that Secretariat’s heart was twice as big then a regular horse heart. Only one Conclusion came to mind: Secretariat had more heart than any other horse, which made Secretariat somewhat, of a supernatural horse. The writer tagged along to watch the horse perform when secretariat was two years old. Even at a young age the horse was fast and stronger than most of the horses. Secretariat has set records with the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont stakes, and most notably he has won the Triple Crown. Not only was his spectacular racing a marvel but also the way that Secretariat captures people’s heart, people wanted to know all about secretariat. Once when Secretariat flew into Kentucky following his retirement there was a flock of people to see him, "There's more people out here to meet Secretariat than there was to greet the governor." Said the tower operator, "Well, he's won more races than the governor," replied the pilot. While reading the article, I felt what would it been like to the see this horse in action. The Belmont stakes must have really been a site to be at. I thought it was amazing that secretariat covered his faster on each turn during the race; eventually give him a huge lead to be left alone. Unfortunately Secretariat came down with laminitis, a hoof disease that eventually leads to his untimely death. Secretariat’s story is the epitome of perseverance.

Grilled Pork & Pigskin: A Love Letter to Southern Football

While Reading this article, I could only think of one appropriate title for this blog, “sports and Religion”. In the article, the writer explains how in the south, college football is pretty much a religion. He describes the Pandemonium that goes on before and during the season starts. The writer begins by discussing how two friends who are big Ole Miss fans got the marching band to play at their wedding. The point the writer is trying to make is where ever you go in the south, there is a tradition, and there is love for college football. The writer also talks about what goes on and what is the atmosphere like in the spring and summer in these southern collegiate towns. It’s the same story across the south; fans keep track of the days left and they pay attention to recruiting. In my perspective, I am a college football junkie as well. I don’t all ways watch my Volunteers but I watch the rest of the SEC as well. I watch those LSU night games and those warms days in the swamp. I cannot even miss a South Carolina Vs Clemson Game because it gets so rough. And of course where I live, in the heart of college football, Athens, Ga is wake up call to College Gameday. My heart deeply throbs for those passionate games in late October where the season is on the line and one game can mean it all. I deeply respect the teams from the south.

Personal Sports Biography
I was introduced to sports by my dad, when I was around 5. He encouraged me to play baseball and pee wee tee ball. My dad was also a big football fan and I would watch all the games with him, I fell in love with the game and my passion for sports grew from there. When I was younger I played tag, wiffle ball, and street hockey out in the cul-de-sac, I would do anything to get out of the house and do something recreational. When I was younger I participated in baseball for 2 years, hockey for 1 year, gymnastics for 2 to 3 years, soccer for 1 year, and inline speed skating for 3 years. For the most part I had many positive experiences; it was a reward for me outside of home and school because I was a part of a group where I met new friends. An initial negative would be the feeling of defeat when I lost at something, yet in the end it was a positive lesson I had to eventually learn and deal with in life. Currently I play Lacrosse for Reinhardt I also play intramural flag football. Some of my favorite sports to follow are college football and college basketball. I watch ESPN, read Sports Illustrated, listen to sports radio, and read the AJC. I cannot miss Tennessee Football, or any college football game, National championship, playoffs in college basketball, and the World Series. My least favorite sports to follow are soccer, golf, rowing, NASCAR, fishing, bowling, hunting, NBA basketball, and tennis. One of the sports issues I find interesting is the BCS and playoff issue because I don’t think the BCS is a very legit way to find out who the best team is. I think that there are teams that are undefeated that do not get a chance to play for national championship. Therefore I think the playoff system is a much better way to figuring out who is the best team. Another issue I am interested in is college players selling their jerseys and equipment for money and other collateral, for example AJ Greene for UGA and five of Ohio State's football players. The controversy is the Ohio Players are going to suspended next season instead of being suspended for the sugar bowl, which eventually leads to Ohio State to a victory over Arkansas. I find Peyton Manning significant because he was a Tennessee Volunteer and he is a major leader to his team. He shows great poise and determination when he is on the field. Another athlete would be Alge Crumpler, I find him interesting because he is a great team player and a great wide receiver.
